Sergio Busquets, upon his departure from FC Barcelona in 2023, was asked about his successor at the Camp Nou. The Barcelona captain had an obvious answer in mind and said:
“My favorite option would be Rodri as Barca’s new pivot, but I’m told it’s very difficult.”
Well, Sergio, it was difficult, but it has happened now. It has taken Barcelona three years to bring the Spaniard to Catalonia.
Rodri’s Legacy at the Etihad
Rodri Hernandez is joining FC Barcelona from Manchester City, a club where he spent the last seven years of his career under Pep Guardiola. Rodri, during his time at the Etihad, established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders ever to play the game. In seven years, he won four league titles, a Champions League as part of a historic treble run, and the Ballon d’Or in 2024, which stands as a testament to his brilliance.
Rodri established himself at Manchester City because of his intelligence, ability to dominate possession, and recycle the ball efficiently. In his 179 Premier League starts for the Blues, he suffered only 21 defeats across seven seasons. This statistic is evidence of his consistency on the pitch and demonstrates how big a mark he had on Manchester City as a player.
Barca’s European Troubles under Flick
FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick have reemerged as one of the best teams across Europe. Barca have won back-to-back league titles under the German manager and have been above par compared to any other team in Spain.
However, it is the Champions League where they have failed in both seasons and stumbled on different occasions, in the ties they entered as favorites. Moreover, Barcelona have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 17 European games, with their most recent shutout dating back to March 2025 against Benfica in the Round of 16.
Why the Champions League Glory Keeps Eluding Barca: The Defensive Dilemma
FC Barcelona have been hunting for their sixth Champions League title for a long time now, but it has eluded them year after year. It was the iconic trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr. that last brought the trophy to Camp Nou in 2015. But af…
Rodri, the Experienced Serial Winner
Now, Rodri seems to be the solution that can take the Blaugrana one step further in Europe. Rodri has the experience of those big footballing nights where the light-hearted and inexperienced usually faint.
At Manchester City, he was often described as an extension of Pep Guardiola on the pitch because of his leadership and in-game awareness. In the last four years, he has won a Champions League, a European Championship, and a FIFA World Cup as captain of the Spain national team. He was also the best player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and won the Golden Ball.
How Rodri Unlocks Pedri and Frenkie
Rodri provides Barcelona with what they have been missing for years after Busquets’ departure: a proper defensive midfielder. They have coped well, though, especially in La Liga, by using a double pivot of Frenkie de Jong and Pedri Gonzalez. Both these midfielders were responsible for dropping deep, receiving the ball, and helping in build-up play. This negatively affected the attacking threat of both midfielders.
Rodri’s arrival solves this Barcelona problem. He is a midfielder who can operate alone as a defensive pivot, allowing the players around him to push forward. That quality would give Frenkie and Pedri more freedom to attack and contribute in the final third. With him, the Culers can hope to see the Pedri of 2022/23 again, when he was much more active in attack as he used to play alongside Sergio Busquets.
The Midfielder Who Never Shies Away
Another key aspect of Rodri’s profile is his instinct to arrive just outside the opposition’s box and his goal-scoring capability. He always shows up with his clinical long-range finishing whenever his team needs him to step up. His thunderous strike against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final, along with his title-deciding goals on the final matchday of the 2021/22 and 2023/24 seasons against Aston Villa and West Ham, respectively, showcase his goal-scoring ability and mental toughness.
Rodri’s Downside: The Injury Worries
The only concern with Rodri’s signing is his recurring injury problems. On September 22, 2024, he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture to his right knee and, as a result, missed out on eight months of footballing action. Then, in the 2025/26 season, he had various injury problems with his groin, hamstring, and right knee from time to time, and started only 17 league games. He is currently also dealing with a back injury and is expected to miss at least the start of next season.
Have Barcelona Found Their Missing Midfield Piece?
Hansi Flick needs to manage Rodri’s minutes properly next season, considering his recent injury history. He must not overuse him and ensure that Rodri is ready for the biggest of games. Rodri provides Barcelona with the leadership and defensive security they need, especially in Europe, considering their Champions League defensive record in the past two seasons. He also adds a lot more to the attack by bringing in composure, calmness, and his immaculate ball-playing ability. Clearly, Rodri to Barcelona has the potential to bring that trophy to the Camp Nou that the Blaugrana have long been striving for.
Another reason Culers are optimistic about Rodri’s transfer succeeding is a quote from their legendary former manager, Pep Guardiola, which has already proven half true. In October 2025, when Rodri was returning from a long-term ACL injury, Pep told reporters in a press conference:
“In the World Cup, he will be the best Rodri, and in the next season, he will be the best Rodri.”
